Film Media in Context - First Slide

How does the industry promote the film to audiences using:

Print Media

The film industry promotes the film Ill manors by using the idea of print media to reach out to people who don't usually tend to use the E-Media as often for example, the older generation (demographic) who have been bought up by reading things such as articles in newspapers opposed to things such as laptops and Ipads as these gadgets were not available at the time. Print media can be expressed in different types of ways. For example, billboards, posters, T Slides etc. These  are usually used in places such as train stations or on motorways to catch the attention of people travelling in everyday life by using either public transport or driving cars for example.

Furthermore, the colours used in this particular advert which is a poster has a theme of orange, purple, pink, red , black and white. The colours compliment each other bringing out each character in order to grab the audience's attention. Characters at the back of the poster are shown to be of a less importance and the character at the front is the protagonist shown to be of a more importance. This links to the theorist Levi Strauss of binary opposition. Moreover, the cap worn by the protagonist in terms of mise en scene connotes a 'gangster' look and how this character is from places in the society where gang crime/ violence is being promoted. The cap is also iconography for 'gangster' appearance.

The lighting on each  of the characters' face is struck by low-key and some additional high-key lighting in order to give an impression of either a distressed, happy or angry effect/look in order to create enigma to get people questioning the mixture of expressions within this particular poster. This links to the theorist Rolland Barthes

The actors of Ill Mannors are not very well known as  this is a low budget film. The protagonist has featured in other movies such as Four Lions playing the role of the character named Omar; the fact that this actor has been featured in other films brings a USP resulting in more viewers from other target audiences which will ultimately give Ill Manors a good reputation and an increase in both sales and profits.

Finally, the setting for this film was based in East London; in the streets to give a more gritty, gang effect approaching audiences from similar settings allowing them to relate to this being another potential selling point, this film consists of good morals towards the end showing how mistakes can be made and how people should repent for their mistakes and become better people by forgiving too. |The fact that this film has good morals may lead the younger generation into the right path and this will give Ill Manors a good brand image.

Broadcast Media (TV, Radio, DVD)
Another way in which the industry promotes the film is by broadcast media. There are many broadcasts promoting the film such as the DVD blue ray, chat shows (Jonathan Ross show), music album, the film premier, television radio interviews, music festivals and many more. This is a very effect way of promoting this film because statistics show the majority of people living in the UK tend to watch a lot of television. The fact that in this particular interview, Plan B is talking about his feelings which allows the audience to interact with him and his emotions from his past. Furthermore, the DVD/blue ray is often promoted/advertised on the film website which shows you options of where and how to purchase a copy of the film from such as 'Amazon.com' . Chat shows like the Jonathan Ross show are interactive meaning you could ask anything and get a valid and instant response usually about an individual celebrity's background and maybe the film or music being produced. Moreover, Jonathan Ross is a well known english television and radio presenter therefore, people are more likely to know and interact with him. Also, humour is a technique where it can stay in audiences' minds.

E-Media

E-media is another way of promoting the film by the film websiteBen Drew's website/bio, social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter etc. All of these aspects promote the film and attract different audiences for instance, social networking sitelike Facebook and Twitter  are commonly used by the younger generation (specifically teens) therefore, there would be a large mass audience following, subscribing or tweeting the film's page or fan page, which would make the page popular rapidly and make audiences recognise the film and perhaps persuade them into watching the film. The soundtrack of the film is promoted through YouTube and the album itself which again allows a wider variety of audience to hear the music. This is cross promoted which means that the film promotes the music and the music promotes the film. This is called synergy.

Now look at each platform individually:What are the key issues and changes taking place in each platform? How is each platform responding and adapting to these issues and changed?

Lots of print media products such as newspapers, magazines, biography books etc are not purchases for free, whereas platforms such as E- Media - the website, social network pages/fan are all free to use as you can easily access it via the internet.
Television is becoming less dictated by scheduling as there are new channels produced and developed such as E4+, Sky+ etc. All of these channels are time shifted by one hour after the original programme timing. More channels like these are being made which is a beneficial for people who miss their favourite programmes so it would be shown 1 hour later in the plus channels. But the television industry has  developed a lot further for instance, Sky+ This gives the viewer the opportunity to record episodes to watch them later when it is convenient. Moreover, there are many developed channels made whic are also shown on the internet such as YouTube, Iplayer, ITV Player and other websites to watch programmes that viewers have missed.
E-media is another platform which is useful in many ways to the audience as they can search up any information, and get to know more about the film. The social networking sites associated with the film is very beneficial as the audience are able to see what the narrative is about and reviews about the film etc. However E-media does have it's disadvantages to privacy. Privacy is something that can not be stopped as police are unable to track this down.

Promotion Methods: iLL Manors (Learner Response)

Broadcast
References of Ill Manors which come under the broadcasting element of media are things such as cinema or television productions or promotions, advertisements via television channels, talk shows and also awards won by Plan B.

Ill Manors was promoted by the idea of synergy. Synergy is the element were one production of a product links to or promotes another. This idea is used in order to gain a greater audience in terms of the product to be sold/shown. In this instance; Ill Manors uses synergy as the soundtrack for Ill Manors (made by Ben Drew : Plan B) to help promote the film Ill Manors which have the same name. People who hear the soundtrack/album may like the messages being told in the lyrics therefore resulting in them watching the Ill Manors film. On the other side of this, viewers who have seen the film may like the film; as well as the short snippets of his songs played in the film; therefore meaning that they may want to buy the soundtrack/album.

The interview above is a form of broadcasting promotion in terms of the media for ill manors. The film; Ill Manors; was released around this time therefore this interview is aimed at audiences so that they hear more about the film and become interested therefore persuading them to go to the cinema and watch it. It's a good form of promotion as he is not telling people to watch his film, he's simply just talking about the main aspects and concepts related to the film Ill Manors so that people who find these aspects interesting would be drawn in to watching it in the cinema.
As Plan B didn't fund a huge amount of money in the promotional side of the film, his team would have helped him get certain interviews; such as the one above; where he promoted his film just through the ideas or concepts about it and through is recent articles and exposure to the world. the more exposure on him would mean that more people would be talking more about him therefore news about him and his film would spread quite quickly through the media.

Print...

Ill Manors is promoted through certain advertising aspects, such as print promotional posters. The poster shown above is an example of an Ill Manors poster which was placed up in order to gain a large audience to watch the film. It consists of images of the main characters, release date, actors names, a quote from a popular magazine along with stars (ratings).

The print in terms of advertising can be important due to the fact that; if put in the right place or position; can attract loads of attention and exposure for the production. By the advertising poster for ill manors being quite bright however sticking to a colour scheme of red and black, it sort of stands out as red juxtaposes the black. On the other hand, this could not be that case as it may be too less colour and therefore may not grab a viewers attention at all.

I quite like this poster for ill manors due to the fact that it has all the necessary contents needed/required in order for the viewing audience to know when ill manors is coming out and some of the stars acting in the film. In terms of the colours on the poster, it consists of two which are black and yellow. These two colours are quite contrasting colours which juxtapose each other. The fact that these colours are used may suggest to the audience that there is some sort of rivalry between two dominant gangs in terms of the storyline. The contrasting colours may also suggest to the audience that some sort of conflict occurs strongly in the film.

The line on the top is quite a bold, hard hitting line reading '...we are all products of our environment...some environments are just harder to survive in'. This is the case as it suggests violence and conflict in terms of the narrative of the film as it implies that the main character(s) live in an environment which is rough and hard to survive in. It also suggests that it not a movie about rich, upper class people, but in fact the complete opposite; working class estate youths and gangs.

E-media

1)
The picture above is a screen shot of Ill Manors Face Book page which indicates, that the film is a worldwide blockbuster as this fan page has over 20,000 likes. The facebook page is quite beneficial as people worldwide can recognise the film and know more about it, comment about it, watch the ill manors music video/song etc.

Furthermore, the DVD for Ill Manors is promoted as well on the Facebook which is effective, for people who want to view the film or repeat watching it. On the Facebook page there is the same print advert image of Ill Manors and this also raises audience awareness.

As the viewers side of things the first thing they would look at instantly, is the long shot image of a male character. The fact that the print advert only shows this male character could suggest that he is the protagonist of the film Ill Manors also representing male dominance. The prop used is a gun which would connote murder, violence, gangs etc. However he looks like he is in danger or some sort of trouble due to his facial expressions which is looking worried. However, in some extent there could be a positive connotation such as safety or self-defence.

Additionally, his emotions which are demonstrated through his expressions on his face could link to his clothing/costume (Mise-en-Scene) as he is just wearing black apart from the cap. This may suggest, that the narrative of the film is going to contain more violence as the colour black is associated with death, mystery and negativity. Stereotypically if older people see young adults similar looking to the male character in the print advert they are going to think he is dangerous and a threat to society instantly. Therefore, they are going to keep their distance from these youths.

2)

A form of e-media which helped/helps Plan B's film Ill Manors is his website. The website can be accessed by anyone with an Internet connection hence why a website can be a great form of advertising as there are billions of people surfing the web each day. The website for ill manors is creative therefore drawing in an audience due to it's unusual and unique layout and design. It's also very user friendly and can be used by even the most infrequent of users. The fact that everyone is on the web makes advertising quite easy as it can be a cheap way to promote your idea or production.

Another important part of e-media is the fact that most users go on line; on the web; in order for social network sites. Millions of people daily visit site such as Facebook and twitter that advertising on sites likes these could make a huge different in terms of the income produced as well as profits. I'll Manors have taken this to their advantage by having both Facebook and twitter page were fans of the film can share their thoughts to others and others can find out more about the production. It also helps to promote the film (as the film is aired in the cinema's and the DVD) as well as the ill manors soundtrack.

Ill Manors - Website Analysis

The first and main page on the Ill Manors website consists of a various number of different characters. The film has a multi-stranded narrative which means that many characters are present however they all have different events and situations that they each go through. On the website all the characters that are presented are the protagonists which means that they are the main characters. The background/location behind the characters is a very similar location used in the film therefore demonstrating where the film may have be shot in. The design layout for the website has been cleverly put together which hints to the viewer the setting of the film, the main characters and its narrative (story line). It is very professional as an overall website page as an advanced tool bar/navigation bar is present and interactive which makes it unique from other film websites such as The Twilight Saga website. The scenes change automatically when the user clicks on a different link words such as 'trailer' and 'synopsis'. The posters on the wall are the film posters which were used to promote and broadcast the film in order to increase publicity.

Furthermore, the use of synergy, as the album for Ill Manors, helps promote and broadcast the film. In fact, in the actual film, short snippets of Plan B's songs (lyrics) from his album (Ill Manors) are played in order to demonstrate emotions to the audience. On the website, you are able to purchase the ill Manors album on line which is good promotional skills as people who enjoyed watching the film may perhaps want to purchase the soundtrack depending on the style and genre of music they prefer. On the other hand, others who have already purchased the album may want to go watch the film. Therefore it works both ways.

The colours used in the website are not appealing neither attention grabbing. The main colours used are black and a very dull grey is used. These colours are good in order for it to match the genre and the film as it is quite gritty and violent. The images of the characters on the website are in colour which means that the colour has been desaturated. The colour black and grey together in this case is associated with death, crime, misfortune, mystery etc. And this links to the genre of the film.

This is a quote that stood out to me as it also promotes the film in a way. It is quite touch and being said by a celebrity (Plan B) therefore people are more likely to understand and listen to the moral therefore proceeding them to watch the film so that they can understand it more.

"My reason for making this film is to show that there is a lot we can learn when we know all the facts; when we explain the why – not just the 'what' and 'how'

TEDx Lecture - Plan B (Ben Drew)

This topic is extremely close and important to Ben Drew due to his own life in a council estate. And therefore knows how it is to be portrayed and judged in this way by society. Plan B believes that people or kids who live in estates are associated with the word 'chav.' The quote, "council house and violent" is what Plan B thinks the word 'chav' means as the stereotypical ideologies of youths living in council estates is connoted. Plan B says that this is an incorrect technique for society to judge upon youths, living in conditions that are poor. He believes that the media constantly show articles which emphasis the dilemmas with youths in general. However, they tend to exaggerate at certain points and stereotypically judging youths.

Plan B realizes what these youths have been through and how they live their lives. Whereas, society completely ignores these people who have been brought from unfortunate families as they are stereotyping them with negative ideologies and opinions. Youths that live in council properties go through a lot and grow up with completely no body except their neighbourhood buddies. Drew recognises how this works as he was once upon a time, in this situation.

Drew was targeting the elder demographic as the audience. He believes that they would benefit more from a lecture like this as it shows them that youths should not be stereotyped and portrayed in the way just like they are by the media. The elder demographic constantly judge these youths by their actions, appearance and language which is truthfully wrong. Drew also made an important announcement which is that people should not believe or take in every single thing they read or see in newspapers, as they are quite good at exaggerating things and leave the relevant and true information out in order to make ideologies and stereotypes dominant.

In terms of the audience, according to the phsycographics, the people in the category of mainstreamers would be hooked as they would want to keep to the trend and therefore think the same as the majority of the world. If Drew was to change the mainstreamers' opinions on this matter, then this may conclude in the overall dominant ideology to be less authoritative. This would also be directed towards carers as they would want to make a change to the world for the best. Perhaps explorers would come in handy as they would want to find out more about whether this view is amd how its being portrayed.

According to Stanley Cohen, a moral panic occurs "When a person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests". Those who start the panic when they fear a threat to prevailing social or cultural values are known by researchers as 'moral entrepreneurs', while people who supposedly threaten the social order have been described as "folk devils". Moral panics have certain distinct features such as concern. There must be some sort of awareness that the behaviour of the group or category is associated with some kind of negative impact on society.
