Scream 4 Film Poster Analysis

This Scream 4 poster immediately shows the fame of the Scream franchise. This is by having the cast from the 90's to familiarise with the audience who have seen the previous film. In a sense of attracting a wider fan base this has been done well as it will attract a wider fan base and by having young charatcters as new. Linking the point to the Scream franchise growing and becoming wider, the use of the release date in red 'April 15th Everywhere' connotes the blood and fear on what will arise on that day, also showing us the audience on how well Scream is established eg. worldwide screening in cinemas.

'Wes Craven' is very well known for directing horror films and the use of putting his name in red immediately connotes the horror genre. The Scream era is made with the company 'Dimensions' so the use of including the company's logo shows they are back by a well established and respected film.

All characters are wearing dark clothing and all have dark hair. This could be to emphasise the genre of the movie and to reassure the audience that scream is dark, with death. 'New Decade, New Rules' the emphasis of using red and white within the colours, link for the audience and the film. This being the white 'new' could give a sense of purity, with there being a new audience and also gives a slight hint of a new narrative, seeing as the word 'decade' is in red. The use of making the 'M' in scream look sharp could link with the weapon which may be used.

The use of the large mask behind the characters could demonstrate that they are unaware of whats coming to them or on the other hand the mask seems as if its been burnt which could be a difference to a traditional ending. Fire is often used to kill the badlys symbolic of hell. Or even for the audience with a high knowledge of horror films could relate to 'Wes Craven - Nightmare on Elm Street.'

All the horror conventions are being upheld with the use of colours red and black and the use of smoke around the headshots.

  2. Furthermore, some elements of mise-en-scene have been used. For instance, the dominant character who is a female, is wearing a costume with a low cut. This connotes that the characters a more vulnerable character which is a typical convention of the horror genre. The fact that the character are positioned in such a way that the female is the main character.
