SAVE TV (Learner Response)

LEARNER RESPONSE:
According to narrative theories, we believe that our advert follows the theorist Todorov. The Bulgarian theorist suggests most narratives start with the state of equilibrium in which life is 'normal' and protagonists are happy and satisfied. The state of normality is then disrupted by an outside force, which has to be fought against in order to return to a state of equilibrium. This model can be applied to a wide range of films and adverts. In this case, it links to our advert.

1) Equilibrium
(The female character searches for her favourite program on the internet and everything is normal)

2) Disequilibrium
(Her program takes extremely long to buffer)

3) Recognition of Problem
(She then gets so frustrated that she falls asleep waiting for it, and has a dream)

4) Resolution
(In her dream she meets a man that tells her to invest in a TV and he describes all the benefits of having a TV)

5) Equilibrium
(The female character wakes up and decides to invest in a TV and is more aware about never to use the computer if you need to watch something as it takes forever to buffer)

50 Cent Reebok Advert Analysis

Colour ..

  • The colours that are demonstrated are grey, white and black which connotes a negative and a serious mood. The use of the dark colours could represent his life in the past and how he's developed positively throughout his life becoming a successful rapper/singer.The colours could additionally reflect this faults that got him into trouble.

Framing ..

  • The typography is placed on top of the image and highlights what kind of background he's from which links with the finger prints underneath. The finger prints suggest that his life in the past could be negative (criminal convictions). Furthermore, the image is normally associated with when a person gets convicted of a crime and they take finger prints for the search of identity. The slogan "I am what I am" connotes he doesn't really care how he's being demonstrated as long as his audience know who he is. Moreover.it is also a strong and straight foward statement which could grab the audience's attention as it will remain in the target audiences' heads.

Composition ..

  • The layout is straight forward and simple which connotes that anybody can have any product made by Reebok.

Size ..

  • The typography "I am what I am" is the largest piece of text throughout the whole of the print advert. This shows that its the mast head. At the top right corner, states a quote from 50 Cent. This is also in bold however, the size shows it's not as important. Underneath placed on the bottom is the Reebok logo which I don't think works well as it is not noticeable which means people can not recognise that the advert was supposed to promote the company Reebok.
Type of Shot ..
  • The picture of 50 cent is a close up, in this case it works pretty well as 50 Cent is a very well known person so theyve decided to focus on him persuading the audience to buy reebok products.
Setting ..
  • The picture of 50 cent has a plain black background which is great. This means that all the focus is on him and the audience would not get distracted with the background being to bright and sparkling. I don't think they worried much about the settings because they had other priorities which would help them sell their image.
Lighting ..
  • The lighting isn't very bright which makes the atmosphere dull and creates a negative mood. However the lighting touches his face very slightly which symbolises the development of his life in the past. Moreover, the director uses Mise-en-scene really well here because the only lighting shown is the one on his face which brings all the attention to him and makes him stand out.

Nina Ricci Analysis

The campaign I studied was a perfume called Nina Ricci. I have chosen this campaign because I could relate to it very vastly being a female myself. The target audience of this are females aged 16-30 with the class of B-C2 as it is a very expensive perfume. This is the campaign I chose to study because it is mostly easily recognised by me as it is targeted at females of my age.
Firstly you can tell that it’s a winter perfume the colour used in this print advert is mainly white, which could represent purity and innocence. According to the YOUNG AND RUBICAM’S 4C’s its goes with the category “freedom” as doves and other birds are white which also connote freedom and purity. Additionally the image of the silver tree without leaves could indicate the wintery season also connoting luxury and fine metal, which goes with the category of “status” as the audience may feel that they have more luxury and have a higher status with this perfume. As the main colours used in the print advert is white there is a hint of red, which connotes love and romance, which could relate to the perfume being seductive causing many attractions to the male population. The white colour connotes innocence and the red connoting warmth and possibly hunger represented by the apples. The slogan used in this advert is “the new magical fragrance.” The word “magical” indicates that it is aimed at young girls as it reminds them about fairytales which are usually aimed at a younger demographic- this is shown by the character being a young, free female in the surrounding of a fantasy world. The character is wearing a baby pink Cinderella dress which could link back to the target audience being females aged 16-30 with the class of B-C2.The font style of the text “Nina” attracts the female audience as it is shown in a sophisticated way. She is also by herself which denotes that she is individual which obviously goes with the category “individuality” according to the YOUNG RUBICAMS 4C’s

The colour of the perfume bottle itself being red suggests that the target audience can ‘fall in love’ with the perfume as it connotes romance and love. Also the bottle is shaped like an apple which links with the theme of this campaign.

Scream 4 Film Poster Analysis

This Scream 4 poster immediately shows the fame of the Scream franchise. This is by having the cast from the 90's to familiarise with the audience who have seen the previous film. In a sense of attracting a wider fan base this has been done well as it will attract a wider fan base and by having young charatcters as new. Linking the point to the Scream franchise growing and becoming wider, the use of the release date in red 'April 15th Everywhere' connotes the blood and fear on what will arise on that day, also showing us the audience on how well Scream is established eg. worldwide screening in cinemas.

'Wes Craven' is very well known for directing horror films and the use of putting his name in red immediately connotes the horror genre. The Scream era is made with the company 'Dimensions' so the use of including the company's logo shows they are back by a well established and respected film.

All characters are wearing dark clothing and all have dark hair. This could be to emphasise the genre of the movie and to reassure the audience that scream is dark, with death. 'New Decade, New Rules' the emphasis of using red and white within the colours, link for the audience and the film. This being the white 'new' could give a sense of purity, with there being a new audience and also gives a slight hint of a new narrative, seeing as the word 'decade' is in red. The use of making the 'M' in scream look sharp could link with the weapon which may be used.

The use of the large mask behind the characters could demonstrate that they are unaware of whats coming to them or on the other hand the mask seems as if its been burnt which could be a difference to a traditional ending. Fire is often used to kill the badlys symbolic of hell. Or even for the audience with a high knowledge of horror films could relate to 'Wes Craven - Nightmare on Elm Street.'

All the horror conventions are being upheld with the use of colours red and black and the use of smoke around the headshots.
